More about Ankle Sprains

ACUTE ANKLE SPRAINS THAT RECEIVE PROPER TREATMENT WITHIN 24 HRS RETURN TO ACTIVITY
90% FASTER THAN THOSE THAT FOLLOW TRADITIONAL GUIDELINES.

Ankle Sprains are one of the most common sports-related injuries seen by physical therapists today. The incidence of ankle sprains in the USA alone is over ½ million per year. Eighty percent of those ankle sprains are to the lateral ankle ligaments.  Traditionally, these ankles sprains have been treated with an air cast (or other form of immobilization) with rest and crutches for approximately 2-4 weeks.  Current studies show that immobilization of sprained ankles, leads to excessive stasis of edema and significant production of fibrinogen, or scar tissue, to be laid down in and throughout the joint space. Also, this approach lends toward reduced blood flow, loss of motion, and atrophy of all intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the foot and ankle. This approach makes it much more difficult for patients to return to activity.

REAL LIFE STORY

I sprained my ankle really bad in a soccer game and didn’t know what to do, but stay off of it. Three days later I decided I better see my Doctor because my ankle wasn’t getting better. He told me I need physical therapy and sent me to Orrock/ Mendenhall Sports Medicine. I was able to get into their clinic that same day. Boy, did that help. I went  in on crutches,  and after the treatment  I was able to walk out on my own.  I have been receiving treatment and I am back to full speed.  I am so thankful my Doctor sent me to see the Physical Therapists at Orrock/ Mendenhall Sports Medicine.

At Orrock/Mendenhall Sports Medicine we combat all of these negative side affects of ankle sprains with early intervention.  With state of the art treatment protocols, we minimize the edema and scar tissue early on in the injury recovery phases.  We spend one on one time to teach your patient every thing they can do to help themselves get better and prevent unnecessary atrophy, decreased circulation, and loss of functional mobility.  The difference is having your patient back to doing all activities of daily living in 3-5 days vs 3-6 weeks.  The key is early intervention.  That’s why we will get your patients into one of our clinics the same day with only a phone call. We look forward to getting your patients back to activity as fast and safe as possible.
